Experience from both  Afghanistan and Iraq shows that half of the helicopter casualties was caused by low tech weapons such as small arms or RPG’s. Usually the crew does not notice that they are under attack. The good thing is that the enemy usually misses when using these low tech weapons. However, as the attacks are usually not noticed by the crew, there is no penalty on the sheer attempt. The ACHOFILO ( Acoustic Hostile Fire Localisation) system changes this doctrine.

ACHOFILO consists of a single or multitude of Acoustic Multi-Mission Sensors placed on the fuselage of the helicopter. The information can be displayed to either a pilot or a gunner.

ACHOFILO is more than a Hostile Fire Indicator, it provides a localisation!

During a live firing exercise on the 7 th June 2013, in close cooperation with the Royal Netherlands Airforce, the concept was tested successfully.

The belly mounted Acoustic Multi-Mission Sensor was able to detect and locate small arms fire at around 250 meters distance, the Cougar helicopter operating in both a hovering and forward flying mode.
